Resurrection Facts Skeptics Agree on!

6 Facts About Jesus' Resurrection Skeptic, Christian Scholars Agree On (click this link for the whole article)

Jerry Newcombe

If Jesus Christ walked out of His tomb after His death, then certainly everything He said about Himself — that He is the Lord, the way, the truth, and the life — would all receive a stamp of approval.

Why should we listen to Jesus? Because He was dead, and then He was alive. He showed Himself to be alive by "many infallible proofs" according to Luke the physician, in part two of his New Testament writings — what we call the Acts of the Apostles.
A few weeks ago I got to see the movie, "God's Not Dead 2," which I enjoyed very much. Even a loved one with a skeptical bent enjoyed the movie. It comes out April 1. I recommend it highly.
...
Dr. Gary Habermas.
Habermas is a leading scholar on the resurrection of Jesus Christ. At Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary, he is a Distinguished Research Professor and the Chair of the Department of Philosophy. He has studied the resurrection for decades now and has written or co-written 21 books specifically on the topic.
In fact, Habermas had a period of doubt for about ten years. But the more he studied the historical resurrection of Jesus, the more convinced he became that Jesus indeed rose from the dead.
One thing is for sure, the Apostle Paul, who staked his life on the resurrection of Jesus, argued that if Christ did not rise from the dead, our faith is in vain and we are to be pitied more than all men. But Christ did rise from the dead, and therefore everything else falls into place.
Habermas takes an approach to the resurrection called the "minimal facts." He wants to see where scholars — even liberal ones — agree on certain basic facts that apply to this issue. It's like Sergeant Friday from Dragnet, "Just the facts, Ma'am. Just the facts."
But what about skeptical scholars? Habermas has two rules for assigning something as a "minimal fact."
In a recent radio interview, he told me: "The two rules for minimal facts are
1. I will use not one bit of data which is not attested from several sources. I have several strong reasons to accept these as facts.
2. Because that evidence is so good, that's why the vast majority of critical scholars get on board with these minimal facts and allow them."

He estimates that the following facts about the resurrection of Jesus would be verified by 90% of the skeptical Jesus scholars. I would add that they would be accepted by virtually 100% of the conservative ones.
Here are the following minimal facts that the majority of scholars, including skeptics, agree to:
1. Jesus was crucified by the Romans. Habermas said that this is "not an evidence for the resurrection, but it's a pre-requisite."
2. The disciples had experiences that believed were appearances of the risen Christ.
3. Because of their insistence that they saw Him risen from the dead, they totally changed in disposition from being afraid to being bold and unstoppable. They proclaimed, not just any message, they proclaimed the resurrection message and were persecuted for their proclamation. Habermas notes, "A number of them died for their faith. They were totally transformed and willing to die for their faith."
4. This proclamation of the resurrection was there at the very beginning of the Christian movement — it was not some later add-on.
5. One of the earliest to believe in the risen Jesus was the formerly skeptical James, the brother of Jesus.
6. Another skeptic changed by claiming he saw the risen Christ was the Apostle Paul, formerly Saul of Tarsus, the anti-Christian persecutor.
Again, these six facts are generally agreed upon by scholars of early Christianity, both friendly and hostile scholars to the faith.
From these, we see a clear pattern. Jesus died on the cross. Then His disciples, who were scared for their lives, suddenly changed into bold witnesses for the risen Christ. Nobody dies for something they know is a lie.
Habermas adds there are other widely accepted facts accepted by many scholars as well, such as:
1. The tomb was empty beginning Sunday morning.
2. The proclamation of the resurrection began in Jerusalem, which the disciples would not have dared to pursue if it could easily be disproven by procuring His body from the tomb. (This provides much of the tension in another movie I recommend, Risen).
3.These strict observers of the Sabbath began to worship Jesus on Sunday, since He arose on Sunday.
What is the best explanation for all these facts? He is risen. He is risen indeed. No wonder the world was changed by the events that began on the first Easter morning.

When God's Grace Meets You in the Darkest Places

Pastor Rick Warren: Through God's Grace, Pain Can Have a Purpose

( click the above link for the whole article)

Although Christians may find their pain to be insufferable, they must remember that all pain has a purpose through God's grace, Pastor Rick Warren explains in his Daily Hope message this week.

...Warren adds that sometimes, God leaves the pain there for a purpose so we may learn something important.
"[God] can teach us much more through pain than through comfort," the megachurch pastor emphasizes.
While many Christians try to deal with difficult situations on their own, all they need to do is humble themselves and ask God for his grace. Ultimately, going through tough times will be much easier with God's help, Warren writes.
"When God's grace meets you in the deepest, darkest places of your life, you realize that nothing — no problem, no crisis, no hurt — can devastate your life. You know that you can handle anything with God's help," the megachurch pastor says.
Not only does God's grace help Christians deal with pain, it also helps them deal with guilt, Warren writes in a March 14 post, saying that the feeling of guilt is a basic, natural human emotion that is brought on by sin.
Christians, however, have no reason to feel guilty, as Jesus already absolved them from such feelings when He died on the cross.
"This is the most basic truth of Christianity: Jesus Christ has already paid for your sins. You only need to accept it. Because Jesus died for us, we're free from condemnation, worry, and death," Warren continues. "Even if there were no eternity, it would be worth it to become a follower of Jesus in order to escape the guilt."

One of the most important things to remember about God's grace is it's for everyone, Warren noted in a message last week, saying that God's love "doesn't play favorites."

"Regardless of your status, your background, and the sins you have committed, God loves you," the megachurch pastor says.

"When the Bible says that God's grace is available to all, it gives no preconditions. It means God's grace is available to you whether you're a frequent church attender, a spiritual novice, rich, poor, tall, short, or somewhere in between. God's grace is available to you by faith."

What type of God would kill the first-born of Egypt?

What type of God would kill the first-born of Egypt?

Context is everything in Biblical interpretation. The ancient Egyptians served many false gods. The Plagues that were set upon the people of Egypt were relative to the gods of the land demonstrating that God was the true God and that their gods were weak, ineffective, and false.
  1. Turning the Nile to bloodExodus 7:14-25. Isis was the Egyptian god of the Nile. Khnum was the guardian of the Nile.
  2. FrogsExodus 8:1-5. Heget was the goddess of birth and had the head of a frog.
  3. GnatsExodus 8:16-19. Set was the god of the desert.
  4. FliesExodus 8:20-32. Re was the sun god. Uatchit was a god possibly represented by the fly.
  5. Death of LivestockExodus 9:1-7. Hathor, goddess with a cow's head. Apis was the bull god.
  6. BoilsExodus 9:8-12. Sekmet, goddess that had power over disease. Sunu, the god of pestilence.
  7. HailExodus 9:13-35. Nut, the goddess of the sky. Set, god of storms.
  8. LocustsExodus 10:1-20. Osiris, god of crops.
  9. DarknessExodus 10:21-29. Re, the sun god. Horus, a sun god. Hathor, sky goddess.
  10. Death of firstbornExodus 11:1-12:30. Min, god of reproduction. Isis, goddess who protected children. Pharaoh, considered a god.1
The death of the first-born (Exodus 12:29) was not only a final blow to Pharaoh and all of Egypt demonstrating the powerlessness of Pharaoh and the truth of God's Word but also it was used as a prophetic typology. In the account of the death of the first-born, all who had the blood of a lamb placed on their door posts would escape the judgment of God on the households. This blood on the doorpost was representative of the actual blood of Christ who is called the Lamb of God. Therefore, God allowed the first-born to be killed as a judgment upon Pharaoh as a proof of God's superiority and as a prophetic representation of the death of His Son, Jesus. It was a representation of the Gospel message that the true firstborn of God who would later die for the sins of the world and that all who are covered by the blood of Christ will be saved from their bondage to sin. It does not indicate that God is mean--especially if we realize that all have sinned (Rom. 3:23). It illustrates that God was arranging history to bear witness of the greatest act of love: the crucifixion.

The title of a recently released film caught my attention: The Gods of Egypt. This column is not about the film, but rather it addresses God's judgment on the gods of Egypt by way of the ten plagues.
The ten plagues were the systematic judgments of God against Pharaoh and the Egyptians for enslaving the Hebrews for 400 years and refusing to let them go.
"Let My people go," said God through his servants, Moses and his brother Aaron. But Pharaoh refused. So under God's instruction, Moses unleashed ten plagues against Egypt.
In each of these judgments, God spared His people, the Hebrews. He miraculously kept them from experiencing His wrath.
The final judgment, the slaying of the Egyptian's firstborn, involved the very first Passover event. The Hebrew people were instructed by God to take a lamb without blemish, to sacrifice it, and to spread the blood on the top and the two sides of the doorpost, forming a type of cross.
Then the angel of death would pass over the Hebrew households, but would slay the firstborn of the Egyptians. The New Testament says Christ our Passover lamb has been slain for us.
Dr. D. James Kennedy points out that each of the ten plagues was a judgment on one of the gods of Egypt. You can find his commentary on this it in the new D. James Kennedy Topical Study Bible in the book of Exodus.
Kennedy notes, "In the Book of Exodus, we see the great confrontation between Moses and Pharaoh. This is the Old Testament counterpart to the confrontation between Christ and Pilate, the representative of the pagan Roman Empire, with Pharaoh being the representative of the pagan empire of Egypt. Here is a classic confrontation between good and evil, Christ and Satan."
Consider the plagues one by one and what Kennedy says about God's judgment on Egypt's false gods:
1. The Egyptians worshiped the River Nile, the source of their lives.
The first plague attacked that idol by turning the water into blood.
2. The goddess Hekt (Heket, Heqet) had the face of a frog.
"You worship frogs," said God in effect, "now see what it's like to have frogs everywhere." In a short time, the Egyptians were sick of frogs.
3. Plague number three saw lice fill the land.
Kennedy notes, "Now one of the gods of the Egyptians was Seb, the earth god…The Egyptians' reverence for the ground having it covered with trillions of fleas or lice would no doubt cool their amorous desires for that earth god Seb."
4. Swarms of flies comprised the fourth plague.
Says Kennedy, "Scholars say they probably were not flies, so much as they were the beetles common to that area, called the scarabaeus from which we get the word scarab, which is a black beetle."
5. The fifth plague was the judgment on the Egyptian cattle.
Apis, the chief god of Memphis, was a sacred bull worshiped by the Egyptians.
6. The sixth plague involved boils.
This was a judgment against the god Typhon. This god, notes Kennedy, was "a magical genie that was worshiped in ancient Egypt. Here was a god who was connected with the magicians, which were the priests of the Egyptian religion. We find here that the magicians could not stand before Moses because of the boils, for the boil was upon the magicians and upon all of Egypt. So their power was broken."
7. Then came the plague of hail.
Shu was the "god of the atmosphere." As Kennedy points out, "Now it is hard to go out to worship the god of the atmosphere when you are being pounded with large hail stones."
8. Next, locusts swarmed the land.
The Egyptians worshiped the god Serapis, defender of the land against locusts.
9. Another major god of the Egyptians was Rah, the sun god.
But Plague number nine saw darkness come over the land, even during the day.
10. "And finally in the last plague upon Pharaoh himself who was supposedly descended from the sun god Rah, his first born was killed," writes Kennedy.
He sums it all up this way, "In the ten plagues, God shows the world for all time that He alone deserves our worship."
Tragically, people today worship all sorts of false gods: money, celebrities, football or other sports. Some even worship their own possessions. Each of these will one day be buned up in God's final judgement of this earth, and then all will see that only the Triune God is worthy of worship.
Whether audiences find the new movie, The Gods of Egypt, to be an entertaining fantasy adventure or just a high tech stinker, it's good to remember that the ten plagues were God's judgments on human idolatry.

If God Has Coffee With Donald Trump, What...

God Has Coffee With Donald Trump

Matt Barber
What would happen if Donald Trump sat down with the Creator of the universe in a SoHo bistro?

...Trump: "Nothing wrong with ego. Show me someone without an ego, and I'll show you a loser. Sorry losers and haters, but my I.Q. is one of the highest – and you all know it!"
God: "Let not the wise man boast in his wisdom, let not the mighty man boast in his might, let not the rich man boast in his riches. When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with the humble is wisdom. But as it is, you boast in your arrogance; all such boasting is evil" (Jeremiah 9:23, Proverbs 11:2, James 4:16).
Trump: "If you don't tell people about your success, they probably won't know about it."
"Part of the beauty of me is that I am very rich. I'm really rich. Cash is king, and that's one of the beauties of the casino business. And while I can't honestly say I need an 80-foot living room, I do get a kick out of having one."
God: "For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil" (1 Timothy 6:10)...
